Data Trends to look out for in 2022
Despite the ongoing pandemic, 2021 saw increased adoption of innovative, data-driven technologies such as artificial intelligence “skyrocket”. In an article from the Harvard Business Review, they outline how the “crisis accelerated the adoption of analytics and AI” and how “this momentum will continue into the 2020s”.
The article goes on to discuss a study by consultancy firm PWC which found “52% of companies accelerated their AI adoption plans because of the Covid crisis”. The same study notes 86% of companies believes that AI is becoming a “mainstream technology”.
The impact of these technologies cannot be understated. A report from The AI Journal found that 72% of business leaders feel positive about the role that AI will play in the future. The report also found that 74% of executives believe that data-driven technologies like artificial intelligence will deliver “more efficient business processes”.
As data-driven innovation increasingly becomes the norm, what technologies will shape the year ahead?

PWC predict that in 2022, intelligent data-driven technologies such as AI will help to address the issue of “messy” data. They state that “AI can be used to gather data from multiple sources, turn unstructured data into insights, confirm and standardize it for easier use and governance, and put it in front of the right people at the right time.”
Similarly, Gartner identifies “Data Fabrics” as a strategic technology trend for 2022. They state that “Data fabric provides a flexible, resilient integration of data sources across platforms and business users, making data available everywhere it’s needed regardless of where the data lives.”
Democratised data has been a long-time coming. Each year, the development of user friendly, no-code data solutions help to further eliminate the barriers to entry for organisations hoping to adopt data analytics as part of their operation.
In 2022, this trend will no doubt continue. In particular, Gartner identifies composable applications as a top technology trend for 2022. Composable applications are defined as software solutions built from business-centric modular components.
They go on to state that “composable applications make it easier to use and reuse code, accelerating the time to market for new software solutions and releasing enterprise value.”
Composable applications will provide organisations with rapid access to the specific data-driven tools they require to generate greater value within their organisation.
Combined, developments with regards to data quality and composable applications will help to eliminate skills bottlenecks, by providing business users with access to the tools resources they need to make critical business decisions more effectively.
Gartner specifically identifies Decision Intelligence as a strategic technology trend for 2022 stating “Decision intelligence is a practical approach to improve organizational decision making. It models each decision as a set of processes, using intelligence and analytics to inform, learn from and refine decisions.
Decision intelligence can support and enhance human decision making and, potentially, automate it through the use of augmented analytics, simulations and AI.”
